I used to tell people this and they never believed me so I guaranteed that I could drop my new site from 2 950,000 to under 100,000 in 3 months (the alexa cycle). I got it to 87,000 by visiting myself and having 3 others visit from time to time. It finally made it to 25k or so before I got bored and it went back up and is stil around 200k. Alexa does is a good tool. If you don't manipulate the rankings you will notice over time the alexa graph will most likely mimic your traffic stats graph over the same time period.
