How Accurate is alexa?

Filed under: Website Traffic — admin @ 2:44 pm

I have been tracking my alexa ranking and it fluctuates WAY to much! One day my websites alexa ranking is 20,000 than the next day I am down to 120,000 alexa rank. What is up with the alexa.com ranking system? I have always wondered how they generate the statistics they do without hacking our websites and putting trackers on them :).

Since I am in the process of selling my website i was curious how Accurate the alexa.com traffic statistics are. Post your feedback

Thanks,
Harrison

  1. They get the statistics based on the number of users who visit your site who use the Alexa Toolbar. The stats are very inaccurate, and should only be used for overall traffic trends. Sadly a lot of people (including many professionals) use the Alexa ranks as an indicator of traffic volume.

If you run a web dev. site and you are getting much less traffic than other sites (like entertainment), you ranking will probably be higher, since most people who use Alexa are web developers.

Let alone you can inflate your own ranking by repeatedly visiting with the toolbar installed.
