I always pack in a carry-on sized bag when I am on trips that last less than a week (or have a laundromat) to avoid checking my bags. Get items like luggage straps, hats, t-shirts, etc... (People will assume you are an employee and treat you diffrently. Lets say you're flying on United... You have a United Luggage Strap on your bag. The baggage handlers will treat it differently because they will believe the bag belongs to a fellow employee who can more easily call to complain that the guy on the street. Same with the United Baseball cap. The ticketing agent will assume you or a family member works at the airline and will make sure to do things right.
